Description
The design challenge was to accommodate a large program of square footage to fit within a small building envelope. Not only was the horizontal site constraint confining, a vertical height restriction of 32 feet made it extremely challenging to create a three-story residence with charming architectural aesthetics, and an interesting roof line that did not appear flat. In addition, local codes limit the livable area and floor area making rooms smaller. Many architectural elements were utilized to push the envelope of restrictions, including major deck cantilevers, balconies, and roofline detailing.
The overall design creates an updated interpretation of east coast vernacular, coast guard station forms and elements blended with beach house whimsy. The tower element on the front elevation punctuates the otherwise low roofline dictated by height restrictions. The archway at the base of the second level focal element frames a nautical window with custom divided-lite muntin patterns. The rear elevation takes advantage of water views with extensive windows, porches, and balconies, all promoting the coastal lifestyle.
Cheerful colors enliven the interior of this beach getaway. Vibrant pear green walls and bright blue Zodiaq countertops greet you at the top of the main entry staircase. The great room, open to the kitchen and dining area, features a bright mango fireplace wall showcasing an antique mantelpiece salvaged from a home in Pennsylvania. A custom Caribbean influenced stair railing ascends to the third level bedrooms, where guests can enjoy additional views of the canal.
